WISD honor students build home for Habitat for Humanity

Raiders and Pirates butting heads is a common sight, but the foes managed to work together as part of their required National Honor Society community service hours. All WISD students pushed their rivalries aside and traveled to the Douglas Community in Plano to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s extreme youth build last Saturday.

This is the second year the schools have united in the cross-town project.

“Last year, the inaugural year of Wylie East NHS, the new members requested a joint service project between the two high schools to show the community that the teenagers can be rivals, but come together as a community as well. It’s about helping each other, not always about East verses West,” East NHS Advisor Amy May said.

As a result of a loss of funding, Habitat challenged participants to fundraise $50 per person to cover the costs of building the home.  Out of the $13,000 that the North Texas youth has raised, WISD has contributed $8,500 so far.

“We’ve made a really great impact,” WEHS senior Haylen Torres said. “It’s amazing how our two schools can come together and help the needy like this.”

Members met at the site, working on a variety of projects ranging from hanging siding to hammering up drywall.

“I nailed in the side boards with my group. It was super fun!” WEHS senior Austin Ryan said.

Working with the Habitat crew fulfills emotions.

“The build was rewarding because we were helping a family in need,” Wylie East junior Michael Roe said, “It was a fun experience as well!”
